This Keeping Safe around Dogs Certificate course is designed for children aged between 7 and 11 years of age.
Each Module has an assessment booklet and children should be encouraged to complete these on their own. A certificate of achievement will be sent out for your child when the assessment is completed.
However, reading through modules together provides an opportunity to discuss situations as well as providing information about how dogs communicate when they are unhappy and how to avoid problems.
Dogs have been around for a very long time. They are often considered to be a member of the family. Things often go wrong when dogs do not get all of the things they need, which includes keeping safe. Just like humans, dogs need to feel safe.
Module 1 looks at how dogs communicate – signs to look out for and what to do if a dog shows certain signals. This part of the course takes a detailed look at warning signs and how aggression occurs.
Any breed of dog can bite. Dog bites can be avoided if we know how to behave around dogs. Dogs often bite because they feel scared or threatened.
In the second module, the course explores how children can avoid being bitten by dogs in various situations. The course teaches them when it is safe to approach a dog while also looking at different situations when a bite might occur. Of course, the best way to prevent problems is to ensure that both are supervised at all times. After all, parents being proactive with their children is the best way to avoid future bites.
With dog bites being a major concern for people today, it is important to gain a better understanding of how they can be prevented. A dog bite can have devastating effects on children as well as the dog. Even an annoyed snap can startle a child. By being proactive and teaching children how to behave around dogs and to understand the signals, potential situations can be avoided.
It is essential that children are respectful to dogs. This course will teach them how to manage their own behaviour. Since bites are often the result of fear, anxiety and stress, it is important to ensure that children are provided with the correct information and advice to ensure they are in harmony with each other.
Remember, subtle licking lips, moving away, panting and excessive yawning, are all signals of stress. Completing this course will ensure that everyone stays safe and dog ownership will be a wonderful experience for humans and the dog.
