It is an industry which is experiencing very rapid growth and for those who aspire to a career working with dogs, starting a dog walking service can be rewarding both personally and financially.
PDSA surveys discovered that dog owners believed it was acceptable to leave their dogs home alone all day. Dog owners are now realising that it is far from ideal to leave their dogs alone all day and that providing them with a walk or human interaction helps prevent behaviour problems developing. Spending all day alone can be stressful for dogs, dogs are social by nature, not loners. This anxiety and stress can quickly lead to problem behaviours. As our schedules become ever busier, people have come to understand the importance of having someone spend time with their dogs during the day and this has led to dog walking services being in higher demand than ever before.
Starting a dog walking company is like starting any other kind of business – exciting, but stressful. There are many legal and business considerations for the owner of a dog walking business such as choosing the right type of corporate structure for your new dog walking business, financial considerations such as setting up a bank account for your business and practical business matters such as writing a business plan for financing, if needed and possibly interviewing, hiring and training employees.
In this dog walking pet services course, typical day to day operations of a dog walking business are considered. After finishing the theoretical component of the course, you can also gain practical experience by working with a professional dog walker to put what you have learned so far into action. The practical part of the course will allow you to see how dogs walk together, learn how transportation can be handled and have the valuable opportunity to talk to a dog walker about what he or she thinks of this career and how to run a successful dog walking business.
Dog owners value an experienced, trained dog walker who can help their dogs to get the exercise and stimulation that they need and enjoy life with their dog without having to struggle with their conscience. It is often said that a good dog is a tired dog. A dog who is anxious from being left alone and deprived of opportunities for exercise will often start showing undesirable behaviour such as digging, chewing on inappropriate items around the home, barking and aggression. This course teaches you everything you need to know to start and operate a dog walking business, how to perform basic first aid and health checks on dogs, canine body language and other important topics.
Module 1 of this dog walking pet services course covers the equipment you will need to operate your own dog walking business and gives students an overview of the various responsibilities involved. Also included in the first module of this course is an introduction to canine behaviours and how to handle the different behaviours you might come across as a dog walker.
Dog health and wellbeing is the focus of the second module of our Dog Walking Certificate Course. Students will learn about disease, hereditary conditions and other medical issues which can affect how dogs walk. Canine anatomy is explored here, with particular attention being paid to the skeletal system and its differences in different breeds. Common health problems in dogs and basic first aid are also covered in this module.
