Continued Professional Development

This course counts for 20 hours Continued Professional Development (CPD)

This covers the nutritional needs of canines, how food is processed within the canine digestive system and the role each nutrient plays.

Canine Nutrition Certificate in Brief:

Nutrition is a concern to both dog owners and dog professionals. Diet can affect a dog’s behaviour, his health and well-being and performance. This course will be useful for anyone working with dogs in a professional role.

Understanding a dog’s physiological needs and the functioning of the different organs will be of crucial importance for the selection of a proper nutrition plan. The course will teach you about the passage of food and nutrients through the canine bod. You will learn about the foods that have a positive impact on canine physiology and the most important nutrients and groups of foods that can have a negative impact.

Module 1 – Nutrients, Digestion and Major Food Groups

Learn about the dog’s digestive system, the various nutrient groups, the structure of those nutrients, how they should be combined and what impact they have on a dog. This module also covers the function of specific nutrients within a given group and which nutrients are important to maintain a healthy and active canine body.

This dog nutrition course will help you to develop an understanding of nutrients required in a canine diet.

Module 2 – Overall Canine Health and How Food Influences it

Module 2  looks at the way the dog food industry advertise and promote a balanced diet and how this can be achieved. Diet plays a vital role in a number of health conditions and these are covered in Module 2. Obesity and malnutrition is also covered and how a balanced diet can be provided to suit life stage needs. Pregnancy, lactation, illness, injury, recovery and elderly dog needs are also covered. Comparing diets and ingredients is examined to enable students to assess the nutritional value of commercial dog food.
