Understanding Dogs

It is well know that dogs are called man’s best friend – they have been a part of our lives for millennia and the destinies of our two species have long been closely intertwined. Because of the deep and long lasting relationship between dogs and humans, we are able to teach dogs to perform a variety of useful work. This training and selective breeding has led to a wide variety of distinct breeds of dog, many of which were bred specifically for a certain type of work.

Different breeds may be specialised for specific jobs, but work and learning are something that every dog has a deep need for. Giving any dog interesting and exciting things to do is one of the most rewarding parts of a life with dogs, for both human and canine. A dog who is occupied and challenged will become more confident, less likely to develop behaviour problems and better adjusted overall.

Dogs are very smart animals who can learn a lot of different things – but they have only a limited capacity to learn to recognise human language.  We need to learn how to communicate with our dogs at their level rather than expecting them to understand the human spoken language. Sadly, we often expect our dogs to understand what we mean when we say things like “come in from the garden right now” or “we will go out a little later.” It’s only natural that we anthropomorphise our dogs to some extent, but this does not mean that they understand what we are trying to communicate to them. Tone matters a lot more than content when trying to get your point across to a dog; and since they cannot talk back to us, learning to communicate with dogs means learning to observe their behaviour closely and interpret canine body language. Much of the time, their body language is subtle and it is easy to miss what a dog is trying to tell us. Many behaviours that are problems to humans are often natural behaviours for dogs.
